The goal of the major, housed in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences, is to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">enrich the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">students\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">global understanding\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by showing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">different sides of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this divided country.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe want to train scholars who have a global vision that is detailed, nuanced and based in a variety of different types of knowledge,\u201d said<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jonathan\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kief<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an assistant professor in Korean studies\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">who led the development of the new major<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cI hope that we can serve as a lens that refracts the light of their interests.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Korea is \u201cnot just a place on a map\u201d but also\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a culture with multiple dimensions and multiple forms of diversity, identity<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and history,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kief<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0said<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The new classes in the major will organize material by framing Korean hi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">story through different lenses, like the class\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kief<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0teaches on gender and sexuality through Korean film.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe\u2019re really here to serve their interests<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. We\u2019ve intentionally built in a good amount of flexibility into the program so that students have a choice\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of what courses they take,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kief<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since 2010, when s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tudents\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">were first able to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0minor in Korean studies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">enrollments in Korean\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">classes\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have steadily grown to now over 200<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One reason for the increase in enrollments is the international rise of K-pop music and culture, as seen in the popularity of Korean rapper PSY (\u201cGangnam Style\u201d) and boy band BTS (\u201cFake Love\u201d)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe power of popular culture is hard to deny and very important to student interest,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kief<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0said<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Six\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">students\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are already\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">declared<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Korean studies\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">majors, and the University is developing more upper-level Korean language classes and planning for a new graduate program in Korean studies. Carolina faculty will lead their first\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Korean study abroad program\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this summer to give students an intensive data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0we\u2019re able to offer a major and more<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0types of classes, we\u2019re able to make the vision o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">global education<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0more wide-ranging, more nuanced and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0more diverse,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kief<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0said.<\/span><span
