Korean studies majors will take Korean language courses as well as courses in Korean culture, literature, history and politics.<\/em><\/p>\n

Thirteen<\/span>\u00a0years after 23 students enrolled in the first Korean language class at Carolina, the University has added a major in Korean studies to its curriculum.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Korean studies majors will take Korean language courses as well as courses in Korean culture, literature, history and politics. <\/span>Students who complete the requirements for the new major will receive a bachelor\u2019s degree in Asian studies with a Korean studies concentration. The goal of the major, housed in the College of Arts & Sciences, is to <\/span>enrich the\u00a0<\/span>students\u2019\u00a0<\/span>global understanding\u00a0<\/span>by showing\u00a0<\/span>different sides of\u00a0<\/span>this divided country.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to train scholars who have a global vision that is detailed, nuanced and based in a variety of different types of knowledge,\u201d said<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Jonathan\u00a0<\/span>Kief<\/span>, an assistant professor in Korean studies\u00a0<\/span>who led the development of the new major<\/span>. \u201cI hope that we can serve as a lens that refracts the light of their interests.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Korea is \u201cnot just a place on a map\u201d but also\u00a0<\/span>a culture with multiple dimensions and multiple forms of diversity, identity<\/span>\u00a0and history,\u00a0<\/span>Kief<\/span>\u00a0said<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The new classes in the major will organize material by framing Korean hi<\/span>story through different lenses, like the class\u00a0<\/span>Kief<\/span>\u00a0teaches on gender and sexuality through Korean film.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re really here to serve their interests<\/span>. We\u2019ve intentionally built in a good amount of flexibility into the program so that students have a choice\u00a0<\/span>of what courses they take,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Kief<\/span>\u00a0said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 2010, when s<\/span>tudents\u00a0<\/span>were first able to<\/span>\u00a0minor in Korean studies<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>enrollments in Korean\u00a0<\/span>classes\u00a0<\/span>have steadily grown to now over 200<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>One reason for the increase in enrollments is the international rise of K-pop music and culture, as seen in the popularity of Korean rapper PSY (\u201cGangnam Style\u201d) and boy band BTS (\u201cFake Love\u201d)<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe power of popular culture is hard to deny and very important to student interest,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Kief<\/span>\u00a0said<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Six\u00a0<\/span>students\u00a0<\/span>are already\u00a0<\/span>declared<\/span>\u00a0Korean studies\u00a0<\/span>majors, and the University is developing more upper-level Korean language classes and planning for a new graduate program in Korean studies. Carolina faculty will lead their first\u00a0<\/span>Korean study abroad program\u00a0<\/span>this summer to give students an intensive language learning experience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNow that<\/span>\u00a0we\u2019re able to offer a major and more<\/span>\u00a0types of classes, we\u2019re able to make the vision o<\/span>f\u00a0<\/span>global education<\/span>\u00a0more wide-ranging, more nuanced and<\/span>\u00a0more diverse,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Kief<\/span>\u00a0said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
