{"id":3233,"date":"2012-05-16T13:39:41","date_gmt":"2012-05-16T18:39:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/college.web.unc.edu\/?p=3233"},"modified":"2024-07-02T13:29:21","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T13:29:21","slug":"playmakers2012neagrant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=3233","title":{"rendered":"PlayMakers awarded top NEA grant for upcoming season"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_3286\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3286\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/Haj_joeupdatedpicMarch20122byAndreaAkin-1-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3286\" title=\"Haj_joeupdatedpicMarch20122byAndreaAkin\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/Haj_joeupdatedpicMarch20122byAndreaAkin-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PlayMakers producing artistic director Joe Haj<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has awarded PlayMakers Repertory Company its largest grant given to a producing theater for a production in the upcoming season.<\/p>\n<p>For the fifth year in a row, the NEA has recognized the professional theater company, which is based in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n<p>This year PlayMakers will receive an \u201cArt Works\u201d grant of $100,000, the highest in the country, to support the company\u2019s productions of \u201cA Raisin in the Sun\u201d and \u201cClybourne Park,\u201d which will be presented together during the theater\u2019s 2012-2013 season.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers received NEA grants during its last four seasons, for productions of \u201cThe Making of a King: Henry IV &amp; V\u201d (2011-2012), \u201cBig River\u201d and \u201cAs You Like It\u201d (2010-2011), \u201cThe Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby\u201d (2009-2010) and \u201cPericles\u201d (2008-2009).<\/p>\n<p>First produced in 1959, \u201cA Raisin in the Sun,\u201d Lorraine Hansberry\u2019s landmark drama of family, race and dreams deferred, has become an acknowledged American masterpiece. \u201cRaisin\u201d will be directed by Raelle Myrick-Hodges, artistic director of San Francisco\u2019s Brava! Theater Center.\u00a0 She also helmed \u201cTopdog\/Underdog\u201d (2008) and \u201cI Have Before Me a Remarkable Document Given to Me by a Young Lady From Rwanda\u201d (2010)\u00a0at PlayMakers.<\/p>\n<p>Written in 2009 and taking up the story where \u201cRaisin\u201d leaves off, the wickedly insightful, bitingly funny \u201cClybourne Park\u201d by Bruce Norris has been honored with the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and is a nominee for the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play. \u201cClybourne Park\u201d will be directed by Tracy Young, whose work has been called \u201ctrue genius\u201d by the Los Angeles Times.<\/p>\n<p>The plays will be performed in rotating repertory Jan. 26 through March 3, 2013, at the Paul Green Theatre in UNC&#8217;s Center for Dramatic Art on Country Club Road.<\/p>\n<p>Through the \u201cArt Works\u201d grant, PlayMakers will undertake an outreach program called \u201cA Dream Deferred: Urban Development and Gentrification in Contemporary America.\u201d Located in a community with two major research universities, Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill, PlayMakers will explore the challenges and benefits surrounding the economic and social relationships between these schools, the towns they inhabit and the communities they affect.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers will hold a weekend seminar with UNC\u2019s Program in the Humanities and Human Values developing a conversation with the University\u2019s School of Information and Library Science which has done extensive research around home lending practices and race. PlayMakers will also partner with UNC\u2019s Ackland Art Museum to produce an exhibit of visual arts on issues of gentrification.<\/p>\n<p>Working with the Chapel Hill mayor\u2019s office, the \u201cArt Works\u201d grant will underwrite a series of town hall-style forums to facilitate community dialogue on the gentrification of Chapel Hill\u2019s Northside neighborhood. PlayMakers will also partner with local theater company Hidden Voices to present a photographic and video exhibit from a Hidden Voices production on the gentrification of Northside entitled \u201cBecause We\u2019re Still Here and Moving.\u201d In addition, PlayMakers will partner with North Carolina\u2019s premier youth poetry organization, Sacrificial Poets, to host a poetry night examining issues of displacement, race, and identity. PlayMakers will host a community event with playwright Bruce Norris and celebrated Lorraine Hansberry scholar and professor Harry Elam of Stanford University discussing Hansberry\u2019s legacy and her influence on the American theater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are deeply honored by this award,\u201d said PlayMakers producing artistic director Joseph Haj. \u201cTo receive such support from the NEA is an enormous acknowledgement of the art we are striving to create and the outreach we are doing to link our plays meaningfully to our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NEA, based in Washington, D.C., is a public agency dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts, both new and established; bringing the arts to all Americans; and providing leadership in arts education.<\/p>\n<p>For information on PlayMakers\u2019 2012-2013 season and upcoming special events, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playmakersrep.org\">www.playmakersrep.org<\/a> or call (919) 962-PLAY (7529).
