The honor recognizes the outstanding achievements of individuals in academia, the arts, business, government, and public affairs.<\/p>\n<p>The three 2019 inductees from Carolina are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amacad.org\/person\/kathleen-mullan-harris\">Kathleen Mullan Harris<\/a>, a Faculty Fellow at the Carolina Population Center and the James E. Haar Distinguished Professor of Sociology in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amacad.org\/person\/jodi-magness\">Jodi Magness<\/a>, Kenan Distinguished Professor for Teaching Excellence in Early Judaism in the <a href=\"https:\/\/religion.unc.edu\/professor-jodi-magness-elected-to-the-american-academy-of-arts-and-sciences\/\">religious studies department<\/a> in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amacad.org\/person\/bryan-l-roth\">Bryan L. Roth<\/a>, the Michael Hooker Distinguished Professor of Protein Therapeutics and Translational Proteomics in the School of Medicine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pharm\/roth-elected-to-the-american-academy-of-arts-and-sciences\/\">pharmacology department<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 2019 class also includes academic leader and former Gov.\u00a0Mitchell E. Daniels Jr., author\u00a0Jonathan Franzen and former First Lady\u00a0Michelle L. R. Obama.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the reasons to honor extraordinary achievement is because the pursuit of excellence is so often accompanied by disappointment and self-doubt,\u201d said\u00a0David W. Oxtoby, president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. \u201cWe are pleased to recognize the excellence of our new members, celebrate their compelling accomplishments, and invite them to join the Academy and contribute to its work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Academy was founded in 1780 by John Adams, John Hancock and others who believed the new republic should honor exceptionally accomplished individuals and engage them in advancing the public good. The Academy\u2019s dual mission remains essentially the same 239 years later with honorees from increasingly diverse fields and with the work focused on the arts, democracy, education, global affairs, and science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the election of these members, the Academy upholds the ideals of research and scholarship, creativity and imagination, intellectual exchange and civil discourse, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge in all its forms,\u201d said Oxtoby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the work of this class includes areas never imagined in 1780 \u2013 such as cultural studies, cybersecurity, disease ecology, nanotechnology, paleoclimatology, and superconductivity \u2013 the members of the class of 2019 embody the founders\u2019 vision of cultivating knowledge that advances, in their words, a \u2018free, virtuous, and independent people,\u2019\u201d said\u00a0Nancy C. Andrews, chair of the Board of Directors of the American Academy.<\/p>\n<p>The new class joins the company of Academy members elected before them, including\u00a0Benjamin Franklin\u00a0(elected 1781) and\u00a0Alexander Hamilton\u00a0(1791) in the 18th century;\u00a0Ralph Waldo Emerson\u00a0(1864),\u00a0Maria Mitchell\u00a0(1848), and\u00a0Charles Darwin\u00a0(1874) in the 19th;\u00a0Albert Einstein\u00a0(1924),\u00a0Robert Frost\u00a0(1931),\u00a0Margaret Mead\u00a0(1948),\u00a0Milton Friedman\u00a0(1959) and\u00a0Martin Luther King, Jr. (1966) in the 20th; and more recently\u00a0Antonin Scalia\u00a0(2003),\u00a0Michael Bloomberg\u00a0(2007),\u00a0John Lithgow\u00a0(2010),\u00a0Judy Woodruff\u00a0(2012) and\u00a0Bryan
