But according to Alice Marwick, an assistant professor in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences&#8217; communication department, the spread of false information isn\u2019t limited to political headlines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can make a lot of money just by spreading these kinds of viral stories through Facebook,\u201d explained Marwick.<\/p>\n<p>High-traffic pages can sell advertisements to sponsors and reap the financial reward of a false headline.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-32174\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/Capture-Well-Said-2.jpg\" alt=\"Well Said podcast graphic shows a blue top emulating the Old Well and then the words &quot;Well Said&quot; underneath\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/>Marwick explained that sometimes, though, the fake news, which she defines as \u201cproblematic information,\u201d is created because the writer really believes it to be true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have a very strong ideological belief, and they\u2019re trying to persuade people to their point of view,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Marwick and the team at Carolina\u2019s Center for Information, Technology and Public Life are analyzing fake news and other major problems surrounding the dissemination of information.<\/p>\n<p>On this week\u2019s episode of Well Said, Marwick\u2019s discusses her research on fake news and shares her tips on how to determine if information is true.<\/p>\n<p><em>This episode of Well Said can be heard in the player above, on <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/wellsaidunc\">SoundCloud<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/0ODJocmbZmgCsLAjouoyio\">Spotify<\/a> or wherever podcasts are played.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><i>Join UNC every Wednesday for Well Said to hear from students, faculty, staff and alumni.
