{"id":31281,"date":"2019-08-02T08:59:14","date_gmt":"2019-08-02T12:59:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=31281"},"modified":"2024-07-02T17:12:09","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T17:12:09","slug":"an-introduction-to-sign-language","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=31281","title":{"rendered":"An introduction to sign language"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>A new course on American Sign Language taught students the principles of the language and basic conversational strategies.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"An introduction to sign language\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AOrafRENVwQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>For the first time, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offered an introduction to American Sign Language course this summer.<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural course was taught by visiting lecturer Judi Labath, who has been teaching sign language for 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the students are thoroughly enjoying the class,\u201d said Labath. \u201cThis is stimulating their curiosity about how our minds work with languages and how different languages work together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Summer School course was the first step in what the College of Arts &amp; Sciences\u2019 linguistics department hopes will lead to more advanced courses.<\/p>\n<p>During the class, students learned new terminology and basic conversational strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Junior global studies major Kelsey Patterson enrolled in the class in hopes that it will help her better understand different languages during future trips overseas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSign language is not an obstacle,\u201d said Patterson, who is minoring in French. \u201cIt\u2019s just another way of communicating for us. I want to go to different countries and communicate with people of different origins and backgrounds.
