Alumni \u2013 Howard Lee \u201966, Chapel Hill\u2019s mayor for three terms, Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources and Community Development, NC Senator for 10 years, Chairman of the NC State Board of Education and Executive Director of the NC Education Cabinet. In retirement, founded the Howard Lee Institute. He earned his Master\u2019s degree in Social Work from Carolina.  Staff \u2013 O.J. McGhee, Manager, Instructional Media Services, Gillings School of Global Public Health  Faculty \u2013 (TIE) Deb Aikat, Associate Professor, School of Media and Journalism and Evan Ashkin, Professor, UNC Family Medicine, Founder, NC FIT program, Physician, Prospect Hill Community Health Center, Regional Medical Director, Community Care of NC  Graduate\/Professional Student \u2013 Mariel Marshall, Master\u2019s student of Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling in Allied Health Sciences.  Undergraduate Student \u2013 Jermaine Bryant (senior, Johns Creek, GA), a Classics major  Intergroup Collaboration \u2013 Diversity and Student Success in the Graduate School. (photo by Jon Gardiner)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"has-content-area\" title=\"undefined\">\n<div class=\"pf-content\">\n<p>Using the tagline \u201can inclusive blue begins with you,\u201d Carolina\u2019s Office for Diversity and Inclusion presented its 11<sup>th<\/sup> annual awards April 29 at the CURRENT Art Space on Franklin Street. Those honored came from a record number of nominations received this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiversity opens the doors to challenge our thinking,\u201d said Interim Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz in his remarks to a roomful of well-wishers. \u201cThank you for making Carolina a welcoming and supporting home for everyone here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The following received 2019 Diversity Awards:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Undergraduate Award, <strong>Jermaine Bryant<\/strong>, senior majoring in classics in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences. Bryant, also a Robertson Scholar, was recognized for his mentorship and critique of Latin and Greek narratives from a perspective different from most classical scholars.<\/li>\n<li>Graduate\/Professional Award, <strong>Mariel Marshall<\/strong>, master\u2019s student of clinical rehabilitation and mental health counseling in allied health sciences. Marshall, chair of the campus branch of the NAACP, was called a \u201cstrong, quiet star\u201d for her volunteer work at hospitals and for taking the initiative to take lunch and learn program leftovers from campus to local shelters.<\/li>\n<li>Alumni Award, <strong>Howard Lee<\/strong>, former mayor of Chapel Hill. Lee, a state senator for 13 years and director of the Department of Natural Resources under Gov. James Hunt, was honored for a \u201clong history of advocacy and breaking color barriers.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Faculty Award (tie), <strong>Deb Aikat<\/strong>, associate professor, School of Media and Journalism, and Dr. <strong>Evan Ashkin<\/strong>, professor, School of Medicine. Aikat, a native of India who became a U.S. citizen in 2003, was nominated for facilitating \u201cimportant conversations surrounding Silent Sam.\u201d Ashkin, a family physician, directs the Formerly Incarcerated Transition, which helps former inmates with healthcare and resources to integrate back into society.<\/li>\n<li>Staff Award, <strong>O.J. McGhee<\/strong>, manager of instructional media services, Gillings School of Global Public Health. In 2015, McGhee became chair of the Carolina Black Caucus which advocates for black faculty and staff.<\/li>\n<li>Intergroup Collaboration Award, <strong>Maria Erb<\/strong> and <strong>Kathy Wood<\/strong>, co-directors of <strong>The Graduate School\u2019s Diversity and Student Success Program.<\/strong> The program has implemented several initiatives, including Carolina Grad Student F1RSTS, Global Grads, Initiative for Minority Excellence, Military-Affiliated Grads and Queer Graduate and Professional Students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Performances by two student groups, UNC Wordsmiths and UNC Cadence, bookended the awards presentation.<\/p>\n<p><em>By Susan Hudson, University Gazette<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Using the tagline \u201can inclusive blue begins with you,\u201d Carolina\u2019s Office for Diversity and Inclusion presented its 11th annual awards April 29.
