(Johnny Andrews\/UNC-Chapel Hill)\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>A new shared learning initiative in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences will support student learning and discussions about heritage, race, post-conflict legacies, politics of remembrance and contemporary projects of reconciliation. It will kick off in fall 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/reckoning.unc.edu\">Reckoning: Race, Memory and Reimagining the Public University<\/a>\u201d will build on existing courses (plus at least one new offering), supplementing the coursework with shared readings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018Reckoning\u2019 initiative will allow students and faculty to thoughtfully discuss Carolina\u2019s complicated history in the context of U.S. and global histories. Guided by well-crafted syllabi, they can make connections they might not have seen before,\u201d said Rudi Colloredo-Mansfeld, senior associate dean for social sciences and global programs in the College of Art &amp; Sciences.\u00a0 \u201cBy extension, faculty and students will consider the lessons of what it means to be a public university in 21<sup>st<\/sup> century America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The initiative will provide opportunities for students to practice difficult conversations, gain a vocabulary for engaging in the moment, connect diverse fields of study to current issues and understand what comparative cases reveal about Carolina\u2019s own experiences, Colloredo-Mansfeld said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29206\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29206\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29206 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2019\/04\/Descendants-Mary-Green-interview-edited-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Students interview Louise Owens, one of the elder descendants of lynching victim Plummer Bullock as part of Glenn Hinson\u2019s \u201cSouthern Legacies: The Descendants Project\u201d class in fall 2018. (photo by Taylor Gartman)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cReckoning\u201d will consist of the following components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two types of courses:\n<ul>\n<li><em>Foundational courses<\/em> include those with a focus on race, U.S. racial politics, the history of truth and reconciliation processes, the South and civil rights and similar issues.<\/li>\n<li><em>New Directions<\/em> courses engage these topics from diverse perspectives across multiple fields, sharing relevant lessons from comparative cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Shared readings: Over the course of the semester, each course will engage the shared themes. Each course will also allocate three class meetings to common reading assignments so all students will have meaningful intersections across diverse academic terrain.<\/li>\n<li>Gathering: Faculty and students will come together at least once during the semester for a joint presentation and to connect with the wider learning community. They will also propose ways to extend the initiative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cReckoning\u201d courses and instructors for fall 2019 include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Foundational:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cClass, Race and Inequality in America\u201d (Kenneth R. Janken, African, African American and diaspora studies)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHealth &amp; Medicine in the American South\u201d (Martha King, anthropology)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIntroduction to the American South: A Cultural Journey\u201d (Seth Kotch, American studies)<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Introduction to the Cultures and Histories of Native North America&#8221; (Malinda Maynor Lowery, history)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cRace and Ethnic Relations\u201d (Kathleen J. Fitzgerald, sociology)<\/li>\n<li>*\u201cRace &amp; Memory at UNC\u201d (William Sturkey, history). In this new 1-credit course, students will examine 225-plus years of university history and gain an advanced understanding of the contemporary challenges and opportunities of studying that history.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSlavery and the University\u201d (James Leloudis, history)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSouthern Legacies: The Descendants Project\u201d (Glenn Hinson, anthropology) <a href=\"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/2019\/01\/descendants-project\/\">Read a story about this class.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>\u201cSpace, Place and Difference\u201d (Altha Cravey, geography)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>New Directions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cArabic Sources on American Slavery\u201d (Carl Ernst, religious studies)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cEveryday Stories\u201d (Patricia E. Sawin, American studies)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGlobalization and the French-Speaking World\u201d (Dorothea Heitsch, romance studies)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGlobal Whiteness\u201d (Mark Driscoll, global studies, Asian studies)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGreek Drama from Page to Stage\u201d (Al Duncan, classics)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cLatin@ American Cultural Topics\u201d (Emile Keme, Spanish)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cLiterary Approaches to American Studies\u201d (Annette M.
