Daye\u2019s first collection of poetry\u00a0<em>River Hymns<\/em>\u00a0has also received the American Poetry Review\/Honickman First Book Prize.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1985, the Whiting Foundation has supported creative writing through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiting.org\/writers\/awards\/about\">Whiting Awards<\/a>, given annually to ten emerging writers in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. The honor is awarded to recipients based on \u201cearly accomplishment and the promise of great work to come.\u201d This year\u2019s recipients join a storied and accomplished lineage of great writers also awarded a Whiting prize, including Tony Kushner, Terrance Hayes, Yiyun Lee, and Tracy K. Smith.<\/p>\n<p>Daye\u2019s work is praised for its exceptional clarity, in both his poetic language and in his world-creation. From the Whiting selection committee, his \u201cpictures of a river life are strung together in language that is clear, lucid, unexpected, and often unforgettable: image-making of the highest order.\u201d A selection from one of his poems, \u201cTamed,\u201d is reproduced below, and his attention to his craft through language is remarkable.<\/p>\n<p><em>River Hymns<\/em><br \/>\nFrom \u201cTamed\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are moments you can hear God<br \/>\nsay things soft-spoken, the sun<br \/>\nsettling between thin pines.<\/p>\n<p>Collected crickets in 2 liter bottles,<br \/>\ndropped them on a path far from the house<br \/>\none or two at the bottom drowning<br \/>\nin the last swig of cola, the smell of mama\u2019s<br \/>\nleaf pile faint and almost gone.<\/p>\n<p>My mama would say<br \/>\nto kill a cricket<br \/>\nis a sin against the night.<\/p>\n<p>Daye says the Whiting Award will allow him more time to focus on his writing,\u00a0he says\u00a0\u201cI can take the summer off.\u201d Moreover, though, he is \u201cjust excited to join [a] stellar list of artists.\u201d He is currently working on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tyree.work\/books\"><em>Cardinal<\/em><\/a>, a book of poetry to be published by Copper Canyon Press in 2020 and has works published in\u00a0<em>Prairie Schooner<\/em>,\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>, and the\u00a0<em>Nashville Review<\/em>, among others.<\/p>\n<p><em>By Carly Schnitzler, <a
