Many of the winners are in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"has-content-area\">\n<div class=\"pf-content\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-28152\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2019\/01\/December-2018-Snow-REV-2149.jpg\" alt=\"Old Well snow (photo by Donn Young)\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>Twenty-four faculty members and teaching assistants have been named winners of Carolina\u2019s 2019 University Teaching Awards. The recipients will be recognized during halftime of the men\u2019s basketball game against Syracuse on Feb. 26. The awards banquet will be held April 8.<\/p>\n<p>The University Committee on Teaching Awards, which oversees the selection process, encouraged students to nominate deserving faculty and graduate teaching assistants for the awards. The committee specifically sought nominations with specific examples that display the nominees\u2019 care for students, mentorship or effective use of classroom methods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese award-winning scholars exemplify the dedication of Carolina faculty members,\u201d said Provost Bob Blouin. \u201cTheir work in the classroom and through their research demonstrates dedication and determination to uphold Carolina\u2019s mission of inspiring the next generation of leaders and guiding them to learn and grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The list of winners follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Board of Governors\u2019 Award for Excellence in Teaching, Nominee<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Donald Hornstein, School of Law<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Distinguished Teaching\u00a0Awards for Post-Baccalaureate Instruction<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maria De Guzman, English and comparative literature department<\/li>\n<li>Donna Gilleskie, economics department<\/li>\n<li>Bernard Herman, American studies department<\/li>\n<li>Ram Neta, philosophy department<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tanner Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spencer Barnes, School of Media and Journalism<\/li>\n<li>Rhonda Lanning, School of Nursing<\/li>\n<li>Marsha Penner, psychology and neuroscience department<\/li>\n<li>Matt Redinbo, chemistry department<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Carlyle Sitterson Award for Teaching First-Year Students<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alexander Miller, chemistry department<\/li>\n<li>Diego Riveros-Iregui, geography department<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Mentor Award for Lifetime Achievement<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Channing Der, pharmacology department<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>William C.
