{"id":27658,"date":"2018-12-04T14:53:03","date_gmt":"2018-12-04T19:53:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=27658"},"modified":"2024-07-02T16:57:37","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T16:57:37","slug":"dj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=27658","title":{"rendered":"The art and culture of the DJ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This Carolina class is challenging students to examine a DJ\u2019s music and cultural role in modern music.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Students learn about the art and culture of the DJ\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AxmlWq3pInQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>In almost every class at Carolina, students are required to remove their headphones and turn off their music, but in his class, professor Mark Katz is asking them to turn up the volume.<\/p>\n<p>Katz\u2019s class, \u201cThe Art and Culture of the DJ,\u201d challenges students to examine a DJ\u2019s music and cultural role in modern music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are so many things we cover in this class because the DJ is one of the central figures in popular culture and popular music today,\u201d said Katz, the Ruel W. Tyson, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Humanities.<\/p>\n<p>The course focuses on a wide range of topics related to DJ culture in the classroom and then puts students in control of turntables with vinyl or digital music players, similar to the setups used by real DJs in clubs across the world.<\/p>\n<p>The students have an opportunity to learn the basics of scratching and mixing music while also gaining real-world insight and knowledge from professionals, such as DJ VSPRTN and DJ A-Minor, who is the official DJ for the Charlotte Hornets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think DJing is super cool,\u201d said Manivannan Senthil, a sophomore majoring in computer science and information science, \u201cbut I\u2019ve learned a lot more about the history of DJing and where it\u2019s coming from and to really understand how DJ culture has influenced music in general.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The class, Katz said, is about more than just music. It also encourages more in-depth conversations about topics that beyond the DJ booth including gender, race, politics and business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found that students are able to connect what they\u2019ve learned in my class to many more classes than they might have imagined,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Video and story by Johnny Andrews, University Communications<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This Carolina class is challenging students to examine a DJ\u2019s music and cultural role in modern music.
