{"id":26041,"date":"2018-09-06T09:58:40","date_gmt":"2018-09-06T13:58:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=26041"},"modified":"2024-07-02T16:56:26","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T16:56:26","slug":"critical-language-scholarships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=26041","title":{"rendered":"Seven Carolina students receive Critical Language Scholarships from U.S. Department of\u00a0State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26042 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/019318_OldWell0017.jpg\" alt=\"old well\" width=\"501\" height=\"282\" \/><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Seven students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill were awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study critical languages during Summer 2018.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"has-content-area\">\n<div class=\"pf-content\">\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The UNC-Chapel Hill awardees are among the approximately 550 U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who received a scholarship from the U.S. Department of State\u2019s CLS Program in 2018. Participants spent eight to 10 weeks in intensive language institutes in their host country this summer.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to dramatically expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages. It provides fully funded, group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences. Program participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship and apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers. Participants are among the more than 50,000 academic and professional exchange program participants supported annually by the U.S. Department of State\u2019s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to increase diversity among international educational exchange program participants and promote mutual understanding and respect between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">UNC students may visit the <u><a href=\"http:\/\/cgi.unc.edu\/awards\/cls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Global Initiatives<\/a><\/u> website for more information about the award and support available to applicants.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><b>2018 Critical Language Scholarship Recipients<\/b><\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Radhika Arora \u201918, a business administration major with a minor in Arabic, studied Arabic in Meknes, Morocco.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Christopher Burriss \u201918, an economics major and joint National University of Singapore student, studied Chinese in Changchun, China.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Megan Casebolt \u201922, a doctoral student in public health, studied Hindi in Jaipur, India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Albert Cavallaro \u201919, a master\u2019s student in global studies, studied Russian in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Quade Robinson \u201918, a double major in Asian studies and interdisciplinary studies minoring in Chinese, studied Chinese in Tainan, Taiwan.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">XiaoSong Wang \u201918, an economics major, studied Indonesian in Malang, Indonesia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Laura Wenzel \u201918, an Asian studies major minoring in education, social and economic justice, studied
