The major builds on the success of the popular neuroscience minor.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25072\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25072\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-25072\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2018\/06\/Marsha-Penner-Department-of-Psychology-and-Neuroscience-and-Biomedical-1312.jpg\" alt=\"Marsha Penner teaches the popular neuroscience class, &quot;Neural Connections.&quot; (photo by Donn Young) Here Penner is standing at the front of the classroom talking to students, who are crowded around her.\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25072\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marsha Penner teaches the popular neuroscience class, &#8220;Neural Connections.&#8221; (photo by Donn Young)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Isabel Marrero \u201918 led a team of students who developed educational \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/neuralconnections.wixsite.com\/outbreak\">escape rooms in a box<\/a>\u201d games as part of teaching assistant professor Marsha Penner\u2019s popular spring 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/ccps.unc.edu\/apples\/service-learning-courses\/\">APPLES service-learning<\/a> course, \u201cNeural Connections: Hands-on Neuroscience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cescape room in a box\u201d is a briefcase-sized kit of puzzles and challenges designed to help middle-schoolers solve a specific problem: An outbreak of a fictional disease known as \u201cgiggluenza\u201d attacks the brain and leads to uncontrollable laughter. As future neuroscientists, they must use hypothesis testing to solve the challenges and unlock layers of clues that lead them to a cure. A fun, interactive way to teach neuroscience, the boxes were introduced at the spring N.C. Science Festival and the UNC Science Expo and were a big hit. Penner\u2019s students designed many of the components for the boxes in the campus makerspaces.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25074\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25074\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25074\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2018\/06\/Marsha-Penner-Department-of-Psychology-and-Neuroscience-and-Biomedical-1359.jpg\" alt=\"Neuroscience will become a major in fall 2018. (photo by Donn Young)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe students in that class make very strong connections with each other as they work on in-depth projects together and also help each other find out about lab positions and internships,\u201d Penner said.<\/p>\n<p>Marrero, a Chancellor\u2019s Science Scholar, graduated in May with majors in biology and psychology and a minor in neuroscience. She was a Karen M. Gil Intern at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.neuro.plus\/\"> NeuroPlus<\/a>, a Triangle startup company that uses video-based concentration exercises to help children strengthen their attention skills. She also worked for three years in psychology and neuroscience professor Todd Thiele\u2019s lab, which focuses on the brain mechanisms underlying addiction.<\/p>\n<p>This fall, there will be even more opportunities for students like Marrero to explore their interests in neuroscience. The College of Arts &amp; Sciences is launching a new interdisciplinary major in neuroscience, drawing on the strengths of 10 academic departments \u2014biology, biomedical engineering, biostatistics, chemistry, computer science, exercise and sport science, mathematics, physics and astronomy, psychology and neuroscience, and statistics and operations research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that there is great demand for a neuroscience major, and we want to better position Carolina to prepare students for future careers in brain science and brain health,\u201d said College of Arts &amp; Sciences Dean Kevin Guskiewicz, who is a neuroscientist and nationally recognized expert on sport-related concussions. \u201cNeuroscience will also be a component of our new Institute for Convergent Science, as we bring together researchers from multiple disciplines to solve grand challenges around disease detection and treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25075\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25075\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25075\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/Kelly-Giovanello.jpg\" alt=\"Kelly Giovanello (photo by Donn Young)\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kelly Giovanello (photo by Donn Young)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kelly Giovanello, professor and director of the neuroscience curricula, led an executive advisory committee involving faculty from the 10 academic departments and the School of Medicine\u2019s UNC Neuroscience Center in planning the major. \u201cThis began as a grassroots movement among the students,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, Giovanello\u2019s then-undergraduate student Amy Abramowitz (who has since graduated from Northwestern University\u2019s medical school), approached her about starting a neuroscience club. The Carolina Neuroscience Club is going strong nine years later and in spring 2018 included more than 500 members. The department will continue to offer the neuroscience minor, which began in 2015; 535 students declared the minor this past spring, according to numbers provided by the registrar\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe neuroscience studies will provide students with the fundamental knowledge and exposure needed to pursue careers and postgraduate studies in fields related to psychology, human development and aging, health and disease, rehabilitation, biomedical research, human-machine interactions and other emerging disciplines,\u201d Giovanello said.<\/p>\n<p>The psychology and neuroscience department has hired two new teaching assistant professors to help meet the demand. Both will join the faculty this fall. Rachel Penton, coming from the University of California, Santa Barbara, will develop a class in neuropsychopharmacology (a field at the intersection of brain, behavior and therapeutics). Sabrina Robertson, from NC State, will teach a new class in neurotechnology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to make the neuroscience major at Carolina the best in the country,\u201d Giovanello said. \u201cWe have about 115 faculty doing neuroscience work across campus. With the support of our colleagues, we\u2019ll continue to develop new courses to meet the ways in which this interdisciplinary field is growing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>By Kim Spurr, College of Arts &amp;
