Carolina will rise faster and farther as a global university by collaborating with its six strategic partners around the world.<\/em><\/p>\n

In October 2006, German Anglicist and literary scholar Bernd Engler became president and vice-chancellor of Eberhard Karls Universit\u00e4t T\u00fcbingen in Germany.<\/p>\n

Engler spent time at Carolina as a research fellow in American studies from 1991 to 1992, and Executive Vice Provost and Chief International Officer Ron Strauss is grateful that Engler never forgot the quality and value of the experiences he had here.<\/p>\n

\u201cCarolina and T\u00fcbingen have operated an undergraduate student exchange since 1986, one of the University\u2019s longest lasting exchanges,\u201d Strauss said.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cEngler becoming president at T\u00fcbingen provided an opportunity to reconnect our universities and deepen our scholarly and research collaborations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are grateful that he wanted students and faculty from T\u00fcbingen to have the same quality of experience that he had had, and he wanted students and faculty from Carolina to experience T\u00fcbingen in reciprocal fashion.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the past few years, faculty connections and research collaborations have developed in disciplines across the University, including biology, environmental sciences, German, humanities, journalism, law, malaria and infectious diseases, pharmacology and philosophy.<\/p>\n

More than 100 undergraduate students have spent a semester or year at the partner university. The universities have also engaged graduate students, both in collaborative research with faculty and also through the Teach@T\u00fcbingen Program that brings doctoral students, postdocs and junior faculty from T\u00fcbingen\u2019s partners to teach in fields where courses in English are underrepresented.<\/p>\n

Chancellor Carol L. Folt became engaged in Carolina\u2019s partnership with T\u00fcbingen almost as soon as she became chancellor in 2013. In fact, Folt, who previously worked with T\u00fcbingen while she was at Dartmouth, serves on T\u00fcbingen\u2019s international advisory board, and she and Engler have visited each other\u2019s campuses to keep that connection strong\u2014and growing.<\/p>\n

As a result of these ongoing efforts, Strauss added, T\u00fcbingen is among Carolina\u2019s six strategic partnerships that involve multilayered collaborations spanning a number of disciplines, schools or departments and receive sustained institutional commitment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been working closely with President Engler to craft that partnership together over a number of years,\u201d Strauss said. \u201cT\u00fcbingen is a\u00a0great university, similar in size to ours, and it is internationally recognized for its legacy of teaching and research.<\/p>\n

\u201cIts arts and sciences programs are housed in the university\u2019s medieval center in the old part of the town in a river\u00a0valley. On the ridges above the valley are many of the bio-medical and science buildings that look like they were built yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n

When considered in total, Strauss added, it is easy to see that this is a university\u2014like Carolina\u2014with both a deep, rich history and an ever-expanding vision for its future.<\/p>\n

An emerging global identity<\/h3>\n

At Carolina, that expanding vision is revealed in The Blueprint for Next, the University\u2019s strategic framework launched a year ago by Folt. Listed among The Blueprint for Next\u2019s five cross-cutting imperatives, Strauss said, are these powerful words: \u201cAdopt a global mindset.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strauss said a major push to think of Carolina as a global\u00a0university began in 2009 when the University Board of\u00a0Trustees\u2019 approved the \u201cStrategic Roadmap for Globalizing\u00a0Chapel Hill.\u201d<\/p>\n

The roadmap, Strauss said, helped Carolina rethink itself. Instead of being considered a leading public research university of the South, or the nation, the roadmap set a course for Carolina to emerge as a leading global public research university.<\/p>\n

Currently, 35 percent of all undergraduates have completed an academic program abroad for credit by the time they graduate, which is double the percentage who studied abroad in 2000. Twenty years ago, Carolina\u2019s study abroad programs were mostly limited to England or western Europe. Today, students can choose from more than 400 programs in 70 countries spanning the globe.<\/p>\n

Finally, Strauss points to Carolina\u2019s growing international reputation, as reflected in recent rankings, as an indicator Carolina has been on the right path.<\/p>\n

\u201cDepending on what rankings you look at, we are consistently in the top tier among world universities,\u201d Strauss said. Carolina ranks 34th among the world\u2019s top 1,000 research universities, tied with the University of Sydney, and 10th among U.S. public campuses, according to the 2018 U.S. News and World Report Best Global Universities<\/i> rankings. Carolina ranks 33rd among global universities and 23rd among U.S. universities, according to the 2017 Academic Rankings of World Universities produced by the Center for World Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao\u00a0Tong University.<\/p>\n

Rising up together<\/h3>\n

But Carolina still has further to climb, Strauss said, as the mandate from The Blueprint for Next makes clear.<\/p>\n

The Blueprint for Next\u2019s vision for Carolina is \u201cto be the leading global, public research university in America with outstanding educational programs at the best and most affordable price, to conduct game-changing research and innovate for the public good, and to bring health and prosperity to the citizens of the state,\u00a0nation and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n

What is no less clear to Strauss is that Carolina will rise faster and farther as a global university if it remains in step and in collaboration with its six strategic partners. And that is why he and Folt and others have invested so much time and effort keeping those relationships strong.<\/p>\n

In March, Strauss traveled to Singapore to host an alumni reception and meet with the National University of Singapore, a major partner, and in April he hosted a delegation visiting Chapel Hill from King\u2019s College London. \u201cOne of the real thrills for me as I travel is for Carolina students to come up to me and tell me how much they loved their time abroad,\u201d Strauss said. \u201cThat complements the international students here who\u00a0 <\/span>tell me that Carolina is really a welcoming University. \u201d<\/p>\n

It is that lifelong bond with Carolina that they take with them that can make all the difference, Strauss said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou might say that\u2019s the graciousness of a fine Southern university, but you have to pair that with the other qualities that Carolina has to offer, which is high-impact science and engagement with people who really care about the work they are doing. That combination is fantastic, and that is what I think the global people who come here fall in love with.\u201d<\/p>\n
