(video by Johnny Andrews, UNC Communications)<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Students embrace the roots of photography\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y0fAWb-uylg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>In an era when photographs made with cellphones and digital cameras have become the norm, some Carolina students have chosen to embrace the art form\u2019s more analog past.<\/p>\n<p>In the &#8220;Darkroom Photography&#8221; course, taught by assistant professor Gesche W\u00fcrfel, students use older cameras that require film to operate and spend hours tucked away in the Hanes Art Center darkroom to make their photos come to life.<\/p>\n<p>Offered through the College of Arts &amp; Sciences, the course allows students to express their creativity through a format that many have forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI prefer film photography to digital because the process is very different,\u201d said rising senior Julia Klein, a studio art major. \u201cI really get a chance to slow down and I realize that I take very different types of photos on film than versus digital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many students find that hands-on approach of slowing down and thinking more critically about every image they take to be a rewarding experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took this class to expand my understanding and perspective on photography and, since I\u2019ve been in it, I\u2019ve really enjoyed the process,\u201d Klein said. \u201cThere\u2019s much more gratification when [a film print] comes out.
