{"id":24124,"date":"2018-03-22T13:37:50","date_gmt":"2018-03-22T17:37:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=24124"},"modified":"2024-07-02T16:54:24","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T16:54:24","slug":"caldwell-family-gift-will-encourage-collaboration-american-studies-ackland-art-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=24124","title":{"rendered":"Caldwell family gift will encourage collaboration between American studies, Ackland Art Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When\u00a0the Caldwell family\u00a0decided\u00a0they\u00a0wanted to give back to UNC-Chapel Hill\u00a0\u2014\u00a0a place that left a lasting impression on each of them\u00a0\u2014\u00a0it made sense that their gift would revolve around American studies and the arts.<\/p>\n<p>Their appreciation and love for these two areas\u00a0goes back to their time as Carolina students.\u00a0Kate\u00a0Caldwell\u00a0Nevin \u201999 and her father, Hacker Caldwell \u201974, were both American studies majors. Nevin\u2019s brother, Hardwick Caldwell \u201909, was an art history major.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCreating the gift would not only be a collaborative effort from a family perspective, but it would also be collaborative in joining all of the things we loved most about Carolina,\u201d Nevin said.<\/p>\n<p><b>A collaborative spirit<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24126\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24126\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24126 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/Kate-Nevin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24126\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Kate Caldwell Nevin &#8217;99<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When Nevin and her family\u00a0began the discussion to create a fund, she realized that there was already a \u201cbeautiful connection\u201d between the department\u00a0of American studies\u00a0and the Ackland\u00a0Art Museum, referencing previous exhibits with\u00a0a focus on\u00a0Southern artists,\u00a0including Thornton Dial and Ronald\u00a0Lockett,\u00a0which\u00a0were successful\u00a0in the Carolina community and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Their gift\u00a0to UNC-Chapel Hill\u00a0is composed of two parts: the\u00a0Caldwell Family Artist-in-Residence Fund and the Caldwell Family Fund for the Ackland Art Museum,\u00a0both of which will\u00a0build upon\u00a0an\u00a0existing\u00a0synergy\u00a0between the two campus\u00a0areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was neat to see that the\u00a0collaborative\u00a0spirit was already there,\u201d\u00a0Nevin\u00a0said. \u201cWhat was missing\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and what could really help tie the two together in a meaningful way\u00a0\u2014\u00a0was\u00a0help\u00a0leveraging\u00a0the resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Caldwell Family\u00a0Artist-in-Residence Fund will bring a visiting artist, representing any field in the arts, to campus each year\u00a0to work directly with undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members.<\/p>\n<p>The Ackland Fund will allow the museum to acquire artwork by the artist-in-residence, or other artists focused on the American South, for the permanent collection. It will also support exhibits at the museum that\u00a0celebrate\u00a0art related to the American South.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an entirely new kind of gift for us,\u201d said Katie Ziglar, director of the Ackland Art Museum. \u201cWe are excited to work with an academic department, such as American studies, to\u00a0bring in different types of artists so that students will have interactions with authentic, deeply interesting people both inside the Ackland and elsewhere on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24125\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24125\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24125 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2018\/03\/untitled-112.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24125\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><em>Kate Nevin (left) with Mary Lawson Burrows &#8217;20 and Molly McNairy at a reception for the Ackland Art Museum exhibition, &#8220;Becoming a Woman in the Age of Enlightenment.&#8221; Photo by SP Murray<\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first two artists-in-residence\u00a0visited campus this spring.\u00a0They\u00a0are Ronni Lundy, a James Beard award-winning food writer\u00a0and memoirist,\u00a0who wrote the book\u00a0<i>Victuals<\/i>, and\u00a0Theresa\u00a0Gloster,\u00a0a painter, sculptor, textile artist and beautician.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Caldwell family very wisely defined art and artist in the widest possible terms,\u201d said Elizabeth Engelhardt,\u00a0chair of the department of American studies and the\u00a0John Shelton Reed Distinguished Professor of Southern\u00a0Studies.\u00a0\u201cThat generous breadth allows the department to collaborate on who and what the museums and classrooms of the future can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nevin, who currently serves as chair\u00a0of\u00a0the Ackland National Advisory Board, hopes that this gift will continue to evolve and offer learning opportunities for the entire community for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe yearly process will continue to provide additional opportunities for enrichment, from choosing the artist-in-residence to working with graduate students in the department to executing a series of events for an Ackland exhibit,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><b>Creating a meaningful gift<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Nevin hopes this gift can inspire other Carolina alumni\u00a0to\u00a0think\u00a0about ways in which they can\u00a0continue to make this effort as robust and beneficial as possible to both the department of American studies and the Ackland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was\u00a0exciting\u00a0to think\u00a0collaboratively\u00a0into\u00a0how a gift would look between two areas that meant so much to us as a family,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was just as fun dreaming this up as it will be to see\u00a0the gift\u00a0actually take shape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nevin\u00a0is currently a\u00a0managing\u00a0director for TSWII Management Company. She and her husband, Lindsay, live in Charleston, South Carolina, with their three children.<\/p>\n<p><em>By Kayla A.
