{"id":22162,"date":"2017-10-27T16:43:12","date_gmt":"2017-10-27T20:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=22162"},"modified":"2024-07-02T16:36:57","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T16:36:57","slug":"three-minute-thesis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=22162","title":{"rendered":"Public invited to attend Nov. 1 Three Minute Thesis competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-22163 alignright\" src=\"\/\/casdev.unc.edu\/collegearchive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2017\/10\/3MTlogo-RGB-3-300x113-300x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"401\" height=\"151\" \/>One by one, the graduate students walk to the front of the auditorium, with three minutes \u2013 and not a second more \u2013 to present their original research findings before an attentive audience and panel of judges.<\/p>\n<p>This can only be UNC-Chapel Hill\u2019s annual\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gradprofdev.web.unc.edu\/3-minute-thesis\/\">Three Minute Thesis (3MT\u00ae)<\/a>\u00a0competition, hosted by The Graduate School and now in its third year. The public is invited to attend the 4 p.m. Nov. 1 event, to be held in the Bioinformatics Building auditorium (room 1131).<\/p>\n<p>Ten master\u2019s and doctoral students from academic disciplines administered by The Graduate School have advanced through the preliminary rounds and now have the opportunity to compete for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First-place prize of $1,000 and the opportunity to represent UNC-Chapel Hill in the 2018 regional competition<\/li>\n<li>Second-place prize of $600<\/li>\n<li>People\u2019s Choice prize of $400 (audience member votes determine the People\u2019s Choice winner).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cEach year, our finalists impress the judges and audience members with their confidence, strong research findings and stage presence,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Steve Matson<\/strong>, dean of The Graduate School. \u201cWe\u2019re grateful to all graduate students who participate in this event. We always have a strong field of presenters; the diversity of research and the three-minute limit help create a thrilling experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 10 finalists and their topics are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Daniel Ackermann<\/strong>, a doctoral student in art history, \u201cMaking Kentucky: Cultural Confluence and the Decorative Arts of Early Kentucky\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Katelyn Arnold<\/strong>, a doctoral student in pharmaceutical sciences, \u201cTargeting Destructive Inflammation in Acute Liver Failure with Potential Therapeutic Compounds\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Saba Akbar<\/strong>, a master\u2019s student in biomedical and health informatics, \u201cAre Mobile Health Applications Capable of Being Entrusted with Your Health?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>James Custer,<\/strong>\u00a0a doctoral student in chemistry, \u201cUsing the Nanoscale to Bring Science Fiction to Life\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aaron Devanathan<\/strong>, a doctoral student in pharmaceutical sciences, \u201cHIV Reservoirs: a Step Towards a Cure\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mejs Hasan<\/strong>, a doctoral student in geological sciences, \u201cWhen They Drained the Swamp: Changes to Mesopotamian Marshes\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nicole Kahn<\/strong>, a doctoral student in maternal and child health, \u201cSexual Health and Sex Education in Populations with Disabilities\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sonny Kelly<\/strong>, a doctoral student in communication, \u201cPipelines to Pathways: Empowering Youth Through Embodied Performance\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kayleigh O\u2019Keeffe,<\/strong>\u00a0a doctoral student in biology, \u201cMicrobial Interactions and Their Effects on Disease\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aaron Taggart<\/strong>, a doctoral student in chemistry, \u201cImproving Materials for Capturing and Storing Solar Energy\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The University of Queensland held the first 3MT, in 2008. Since that time, the competition has grown to include more than 600 institutions in 59 countries.<\/p>\n<p><em>Story by Deb Saine for the <a
