The production is directed by<strong> Taibi\u200b \u200bMagar\u200b<\/strong>, in her PlayMakers directorial debut.<\/p>\n<p>Hamill\u2019s adaptation of \u201cSense and Sensibility\u201d brings out the whimsy and wit at the heart of this beloved tale. The Dashwood sisters, level-headed Elinor and passionate, impetuous Marianne, are torn from their comfortable upper class lives when family fortunes change, and tossed into a world swirling with the social pressures of class, money, and reputation. Photos by HuthPhoto.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhen Vivienne approached me about directing at PlayMakers this season, I immediately suggested we stage \u2018Sense and Sensibility\u2019,\u201d said Magar. \u201cI was captivated by Kate Hamill\u2019s ability to take something cherished, like Jane Austen, and reimagine it in a way that honors the original while bringing out elements of the characters and their world that we might see a bit differently today. The play cracks open the entrapment of the Dashwood sisters by systems they can\u2019t control, but in such a humorous and wonderfully theatrical way that really allows Austen\u2019s wit and satiric observations to shine through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a special kind of magic that happens when artists like the brilliant Kate Hamill and our amazing director, Taibi Magar, take on the retelling of a classic tale as a labor of love,\u201d said <strong>Vivienne\u200b \u200bBenesch\u200b<\/strong>, Producing Artistic Director of PlayMakers Repertory Company. \u201cThis theatrical take on Austen transforms \u2018Sense and Sensibility\u2019 into a vibrant, deliciously gossipy, and entirely entertaining tour de force.
