Her lab is dedicated to unlocking the hidden chemistry of bacterial genomes and discovering the next generation of antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/nih-directors-high-risk-research-awards-announced-2017\">NIH Director\u2019s New Innovator Award<\/a>, established in 2007, supports unusually innovative research from early career investigators. Li was among 55 winners nationwide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/commonfund.nih.gov\/newinnovator\/\">The New Innovator Award<\/a> will <a href=\"https:\/\/commonfund.nih.gov\/newinnovator\/AwardRecipients?utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=nihhighrisk\">support Li\u2019s research<\/a> to identify novel combinations of antibiotics that exert synergistic activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria. Understanding how these antibiotics work together may create new ways to overcome antibiotic resistance.<\/p>\n<p>The award was announced Oct. 5 as a component of the NIH\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/commonfund.nih.gov\/highrisk\/\">High-Risk, High-Reward Research program<\/a>, part of the NIH Common Fund, which funded 86 awards to exceptionally creative scientists proposing to use highly innovative approaches to tackle major challenges in biomedical research.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants of the program are encouraged to think outside-the-box and to pursue exciting, trailblazing ideas in any area of research relevant to the NIH mission.<\/p>\n<p><em>Li is a previous winner of a <a href=\"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/2016\/10\/17\/li-packard-fellow\/\">Packard Fellowship<\/a>, an NSF CAREER Award and a <a href=\"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/2016\/07\/20\/rita-allen-scholar\/\">Rita Allen Foundation Scholars award. <\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Read an Endeavors magazine \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/2017\/01\/04\/bo-li-wsw\/\">Women in Science Wednesday<\/a>\u201d feature on Bo Li.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chemist Bo Li at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has received a New Innovator Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
