Folt on research starting with curiosity\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l3aZ9IdY9TA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Participating in undergraduate research at Carolina changed Troy Blackburn\u2019s career path.<\/p>\n<p>Blackburn, a professor of exercise and sport science and associate dean for undergraduate research, received bachelor\u2019s and Ph.D. degrees from UNC. He said that light-bulb moment happened because a senior honors thesis ignited his interest in research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was life-altering. It\u2019s the reason why I\u2019m here today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Blackburn wants all undergraduate students to experience that same spark and to learn more about the value of undergraduate research.<\/p>\n<p>Students will have that opportunity during University Research Week, a semi-annual, campus-wide event that enhances opportunities for undergraduates to discover and engage in research and scholarship. It is part of Carolina\u2019s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), which emphasizes \u201cLearning by Connecting, Doing and Making:\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A series of events are planned throughout the week. A panel on Oct. 13 will feature political scientist Frank Baumgartner and former undergraduates who are co-authors with him on a new book, <em>Deadly Justice: A Statistical Portrait of the Death Penalty. <\/em>It will be held at 11 a.m. at the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History.<\/p>\n<p>Academic departments are encouraged to hold events such as lab tours and interest group meetings. Faculty are asked to take 15 to 20 minutes in their classes to talk about their own research. The Office for Undergraduate Research will host workshops on how to get involved in research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnvision that you are a first-year student, and in one week, you may learn about research in English, physics, math \u2014 whatever courses you are taking,\u201d Blackburn said. \u201cMaybe one of those piques your interest. It\u2019s an excellent way to demonstrate the humanities, natural and social sciences coming together to solve the world\u2019s problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Visit the developing URW Schedule on the <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/undgrares2020.sites.unc.edu\/\"><em>Office for Undergraduate Research web site<\/em><\/a><em>, under \u201cHighlights\u201d for details about the week\u2019s events.
