{"id":17199,"date":"2016-12-01T14:55:47","date_gmt":"2016-12-01T19:55:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=17199"},"modified":"2024-07-02T16:30:04","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T16:30:04","slug":"resilient-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=17199","title":{"rendered":"Coastal Resilience Center to conduct White House study on resilient design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-17200\" src=\"\/\/casdev.unc.edu\/collegearchive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2016\/12\/sunset-731211_1280-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"sunset-731211_1280\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/12\/sunset-731211_1280-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/12\/sunset-731211_1280-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/12\/sunset-731211_1280-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/12\/sunset-731211_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>UNC&#8217;s Coastal Resilience Center of Excellence (CRC), funded by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Science and Technology Directorate (S&amp;T) Office of University Programs, is funding one of the new federal actions last month as part of the Obama administration\u2019s recognition of the role of resilient design education in a resilient future.<\/p>\n<p>The announced action, a literature review and landscape survey by the CRC, will examine the established state-of-the-art in the science and education of resilient design.<\/p>\n<p>Conducting a survey of the current state-of-the-art in science and education is an important first step toward advancing any academic discipline, OUP Director Matthew Clark said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecent events have shown that we need the best scientists and engineers to be focused on improving resilience to disasters, and that starts with research and education,\u201d he said. \u201cTo save lives, property and money, there are no better investments.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17201\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17201\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17201\" src=\"\/\/casdev.unc.edu\/collegearchive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2016\/12\/smith_gavin_0803-731x1024-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Coastal Resilience Center Director Gavin Smith.\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coastal Resilience Center Director Gavin Smith.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The study will include identifying science and education approaches that integrate resilient design across disciplines such as mathematics, economics, engineering, architecture, urban planning, community planning, climate science, risk science and social science. For example, a program that combines architectural design with engineering and climate science. The survey will also identify interdisciplinary approaches to designing to uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Coastal Resilience Center Director Gavin Smith said the study would identify best practices being taught in design-based curricula, identify where gaps exist, and propose improvements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe losses associated with natural hazards and disasters continue to rise in the United States and around the world,\u201d Smith said. \u201cIn an era of climate change, old ways of thinking about where and how we build in relation to hazards will not suffice. We need new ways of designing communities, cities, and regions to reflect the latest collective understanding of risk, vulnerability, and uncertainty and based on that understanding, advance disaster resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Study results will be posted at https:\/\/hsuniversityprograms.org and\u00a0<a
