Special events associated with the show begin March 14.<\/p>\n<p>Music and lyrics for the \u201cbloody great\u201d musical, \u201cSweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, a musical thriller,\u201d are by the legendary Sondheim, with a book written by Hugh Wheeler, from an adaptation by Christopher Bond. The show was originally directed on Broadway by Harold Prince with orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick.<\/p>\n<p>A brilliant tale of obsession and revenge, \u201cSweeney Todd\u201d combines melodrama, murder \u2014 and \u201cthe worst pies in London\u201d \u2014with a sumptuous score. Murderous barber Sweeney and his culinary accomplice Mrs. Lovett take the audience on a spellbinding journey of soaring songs, comic turns and thrilling drama.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times proclaimed the multiple Tony and Olivier Award-winner a \u201cwhopping grisly yarn\u201d and \u201cthumping good entertainment.\u201d The Hollywood Reporter raved that \u201can audacious balance of acid-drenched comedy with subversive class warfare, gore and glowering drama puts \u2018Sweeney Todd\u2019 in a league of its own.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13319\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13319\" style=\"width: 584px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13319 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/sweeney_todd004-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Annie Golden as Mrs. Lovett and David St. Louis as Sweeney Todd. He has appeared on Broadway in \u201cSide Show,\u201d \u201cHarlem Song,\u201d \u201cRent,\u201d \u201cJesus Christ Superstar\u201d and \u201cThe Scarlet Pimpernel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Annie Golden, featured in Broadway hits such as \u201cViolet,\u201d \u201cOn the Town\u201d and \u201cThe Full Monty\u201d will be Mrs. Lovett. She originated the role of Squeaky Fromme in the world premiere of Sondheim\u2019s \u201cAssassins.\u201d Golden appears as Norma Romano in the hit Netflix series \u201cOrange Is the New Black,\u201d for which she won a Screen Actors Guild Award.<\/p>\n<p>The company also features many of the cast members from PlayMakers\u2019 2014 hit \u201cInto the Woods,\u201d along with PlayMakers\u2019 favorites, such as Ray Dooley appearing as Judge Turpin, and Brian Owen from \u201cPeter and the Starcatcher\u201d returning as Pirelli.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Hartman is music director. He has led all of PlayMakers\u2019 Sondheim musicals, as well as its production of \u201cCabaret.\u201d His Broadway credits include \u201c<em>Sondheim on Sondheim,\u201d \u201cAvenue Q,\u201d \u201cMiss Saigon\u201d <\/em><em>and \u201c<\/em><em>1776<\/em><em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Performances will take place in the Paul Green Theatre in the Center for Dramatic Art on Country Club Road. The event is free and open to the public. Participants share coffee and hors d\u2019oeuvres provided by series sponsor Jujube Restaurant, learn about the vision for the show and get a sneak peek at the sets and costumes in progress.
