{"id":13462,"date":"2016-04-15T12:07:05","date_gmt":"2016-04-15T17:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=13462"},"modified":"2024-07-02T16:28:16","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T16:28:16","slug":"real-americans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=13462","title":{"rendered":"PlayMakers concludes PRC2 series with Dan Hoyle in \u2018The Real Americans\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-13463\" src=\"\/\/casdev.unc.edu\/collegearchive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2016\/04\/Real-Americans-Web-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"Real-Americans-Web\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/04\/Real-Americans-Web-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/04\/Real-Americans-Web.jpg 647w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>PlayMakers Repertory Company, the professional theater in residence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will present \u201cThe Real Americans,\u201d written and performed by Dan Hoyle, April 27-May 1.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers brings the acclaimed solo performer to the Triangle as the finale of its 2015-16 PRC<sup>2 <\/sup>series, which features innovative, topical presentations coupled with engaging and insightful post-show discussions with the creative artists and expert panelists after each performance.<\/p>\n<p>Armed with only a van and a tape recorder, Hoyle traveled across the United States in search of what\u2019s at the heart of the heartland. In addition to down home hospitality, he witnessed angry populism among the citizens who have been called \u201cthe real Americans.\u201d With brilliant documentary storytelling that has been compared to the work of Studs Terkel and Charles Kuralt, his reflections provide a unique look at the divide between big city and small town America.<\/p>\n<p>Hoyle is an actor\/playwright\/comedy writer whose brand of journalistic theater has been hailed as \u201criveting, funny and poignant\u201d (The New York Times) and \u201chilarious, moving and necessary\u201d (Salon). His solo shows, including \u201cTings Dey Happen,\u201d \u201cFlorida 2004: The Big Bummer,\u201d \u201cCircumnavigator\u201d and \u201cEach and Every Thing\u201d (Bay Area Theater Critics Circle Award), have been performed at theaters and universities across the country. As an actor, Hoyle has appeared Off-Broadway and in several web comedy series. His multi-actor play \u201c<em>Game On<\/em>\u201d won the TBA Award, while another, \u201c<em>The Block,\u201d<\/em> will have its Off-Broadway premiere in June.<\/p>\n<p>The Huffington Post described \u201cThe Real Americans\u201d as \u201cnothing short of brilliant: unsettling, poignant and hilarious.\u201d The San Francisco Chronicle found Hoyle\u2019s performance \u201cimpressive \u2026 beneath the masterful humor, a rich texture of human connections asserts itself.\u201d The New Yorker calls him \u201csmart, entertaining, funny, insightful and surprising.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an important \u2014 if not imperative \u2014 time to be investigating what makes our heartland tick and questioning the assumptions we make about our fellow Americans,\u201d says Producing Artistic Director Vivienne Benesch. \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to have in Dan Hoyle a keen observer, empathic listener, astute writer and dynamic performer to lead audiences through this astonishing cross country road trip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. nightly and 2 p.m. on May 1 in the Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre in the Center for Dramatic Art on Country Club Road.
