{"id":13396,"date":"2016-04-07T08:12:46","date_gmt":"2016-04-07T13:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=13396"},"modified":"2024-07-02T16:28:05","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T16:28:05","slug":"women-in-science-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=13396","title":{"rendered":"Women in Science Symposium helps build networks, confidence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In high school, Tojan Rahhal quickly noticed that there was a shortage of women in her math and science classes.<\/p>\n<p>As an undergraduate at NC State and then as a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy, she personally sought out women scientists to serve as mentors and build a network that would help her though her scientific endeavors.<\/p>\n<p>On April 6, Rahhal and the <a href=\"http:\/\/tibbs.unc.edu\/resources\/women-in-science\/\">UNC Women in Science<\/a> group hoped to help more than 100 other women scientists build their similar networks at the annual Women in Science Symposium.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13398\" src=\"\/\/casdev.unc.edu\/collegearchive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2016\/04\/women-in-science.jpg\" alt=\"women-in-science\" width=\"230\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/04\/women-in-science.jpg 230w, https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2016\/04\/women-in-science-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/>. With women being a minority in the sciences, they don\u2019t have a platform and if they do it\u2019s not a large platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Held at the Koury Oral Health Sciences Building, the four-hour conference featured poster presentations by more than 50 Carolina students and keynote speaker Barbar Hamkalo, a University of California-Irvine professor emeritus who was one of the earliest woman faculty members recruited to the university\u2019s Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.<\/p>\n<p>An internationally recognized environmental scientist, Chancellor Carol L. Folt also spoke at the event discussing her career and the importance of women in the field. She urged the attendees of mostly post-doctoral and graduate students to build those support and mentoring networks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look around our University you see a lot of outstanding role models,\u201d Folt said. \u201cThere are many women in every position from your departments to your post docs to your graduate student leaders. Leadership happens at every single level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With initiatives such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/chancellorssciencescholars.web.unc.edu\/\">Chancellor\u2019s Science Scholars<\/a>, Folt said, the University is working hard to continue to build pipelines to build more diversity in math and sciences, and create an environment of success for everybody.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI care deeply about it, and so does everybody that works with me,\u201d she said. \u201cWe want to find ways to foster success.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>By Brandon Bieltz, Office of Communications and
