Their work is a testament to American ingenuity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The National Medal of Technology and Innovation was created by statute in 1980 and is administered for the White House by the U.S. Department of Commerce\u2019s Patent and Trademark Office. The award recognizes those who have made lasting contributions to America\u2019s competitiveness and quality of life and helped strengthen the Nation\u2019s technological workforce. A distinguished independent committee representing the private and public sectors submits recommendations to the President.<\/p>\n<p><em>A livestream of the award ceremony will be broadcasted on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unc.edu\">UNC.edu<\/a> starting at 2:30 p.m.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chemist Joseph DeSimone will receive a National Medal of Technology and Innovation \u2014 among the nation\u2019s highest honors for advancing innovation in science.
