{"id":12217,"date":"2015-11-23T08:58:25","date_gmt":"2015-11-23T13:58:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=12217"},"modified":"2024-07-02T16:08:47","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T16:08:47","slug":"cherokee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=12217","title":{"rendered":"Soaking in the Cherokee language"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[youtube]https:\/\/youtu.be\/WbNwEuA7ly0[\/youtube]<\/p>\n<p>Each Tuesday, a group of Carolina students and a professor have been fighting the midafternoon energy spiral with a steaming pot of coffee, cookies and a dose of Cherokee language immersion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/americanstudies.unc.edu\/ben-frey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benjamin Frey<\/a>, a professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">College of Arts and Science\u2019s <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/americanstudies.unc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of American Studies<\/a>, dreamt up the idea of an out-of-class language experience while he was working on his post-doctoral studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI envisioned it originally as an opportunity for my students in Cherokee language classes to come and use the language in an informal setting,\u201d Frey said.<\/p>\n<p>That was in 2013. Today, the open-door coffees are still offered in Abernathy Hall at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays during the fall and spring semesters.<\/p>\n<p>Each session, up to a dozen students, faculty and staff members file in with notebooks, preparing to learn a language which Frey said has been spoken in North Carolina for 11,000 years. Each class begins as soon as Frey asks students their names and if they would like a cup of coffee \u2014 all Cherokee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have people speaking by the first lesson,\u201d said a grinning Frey.<\/p>\n<p>Students say they like that the class is so immersive \u2013 and they learn so much, so quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I can tell first, second, and third-person,\u201d said Jay Raleigh, a
