{"id":12000,"date":"2015-11-10T15:53:17","date_gmt":"2015-11-10T20:53:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=12000"},"modified":"2024-07-02T16:08:32","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T16:08:32","slug":"novel-nov18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=12000","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating an early unpublished Latin American novel on Nov. 18"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_12001\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12001\" style=\"width: 215px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/\/casdev.unc.edu\/collegearchive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/11\/Vila_JoseMariaVargas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12001 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/Vila_JoseMariaVargas-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Vargas Vila\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12001\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Vargas Vila<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/events.unc.edu\/event\/inthegardens\/\">A roundtable discussion on Nov. 18<\/a> at UNC will celebrate the publication of Latin American writer Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Vargas Vila\u2019s manuscript of his novel, <em>En los jardines de Lesbos<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Pleasants Family Assembly Room in Wilson Library.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers include Daniel Balderston, Mellon Professor, University of Pittsburgh; Maria DeGuzman, Director of Latina\/o Studies, UNC-Chapel Hill; David William Foster, Regents Professor at Arizona State University; and Ariana Vigil, Women\u2019s and Gender Studies Professor, UNC-Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n<p>The book is the first novel\u00a0in Latin America\u00a0dealing clearly and specifically with the topic of lesbianism.\u00a0UNC-Chapel Hill was able to purchase the unpublished manuscript, which is now part of the University&#8217;s Rare Book Collection.<\/p>\n<p>Associate professor <a href=\"http:\/\/romancestudies.unc.edu\/faculty\/jcge\/\">Juan Carlos Gonz\u00e1lez Espitia,<\/a> in the Department of Romance Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences led the effort to acquire the book. He is the foremost expert and editor of the work of\u00a0Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Vargas Vila and also created a UNC Libraries <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.lib.unc.edu\/wilson\/rbc\/vargasvila\/bio_en.html\">comprehensive digital library<\/a> of all\u00a0the author\u2019s works.<\/p>\n<p>The event is sponsored by the Department of Romance Studies, the Institute for the Study of the Americas, the Program in Latina\/o Studies, the Center for Global Initiatives, the Rare Book Collection and the Department of Women\u2019s and Gender Studies.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Romance Studies also has related events on <a
