Former U.S. Congressman Barney Frank will discuss \u201cdownsizing our global ambition\u201d for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\u2019s 2015 Weil Lecture on American Citizenship on Sept. 24.<\/p>\n

The evening lecture will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Carroll Hall and will be preceded by a public question and answer session from 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. in the University Room of Hyde Hall. Susan King, dean of the UNC School of Media and Journalism and John Thomas Kerr Distinguished Professor, will facilitate the conversation.<\/p>\n

Frank\u2019s lecture will also be followed by a signing of his latest book, \u201cFrank: A Life in Politics from the Great Society to Same-Sex Marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frank served as a U.S. Congressman from 1981-2013 and as chairman of the House Financial Services Committee from 2007-2011. While in Congress, he worked to adjust America\u2019s spending priorities, to reduce the deficit and to protect funding for important quality-of-life needs at home. In 1987, Frank became the first member of Congress to voluntarily come out as gay, and in 2012, he married his longtime partner, becoming the nation\u2019s first Congressman in a same-sex marriage while in office.<\/p>\n

The free, public talk, titled \u201cThe Importance of Being Dispensable: Downsizing our Global Ambition \u2014 Why Reducing America’s Global Ambition is the Prerequisite for Diminishing Inequality,\u201d is hosted by the Institute for the Arts and Humanities in UNC\u2019s College of Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n
