{"id":10402,"date":"2015-04-22T09:41:38","date_gmt":"2015-04-22T14:41:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=10402"},"modified":"2024-07-02T16:07:22","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T16:07:22","slug":"shapiropulitzer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=10402","title":{"rendered":"English professor\u2019s book of poems was a 2015 Pulitzer finalist"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_10403\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10403\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/\/casdev.unc.edu\/collegearchive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/04\/Shapiro-Alan-Exum-portrait-NC-Gallery.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10403 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/casdev.unc.edu\/collegearchive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/04\/Shapiro-Alan-Exum-portrait-NC-Gallery-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Shapiro Alan Exum portrait NC Gallery\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alan Shapiro (photo by Steve Exum)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Reel to Reel<\/em>, a book of poems by Alan Shapiro, Kenan Distinguished Professor of English and Creative Writing in the College of Arts and Sciences, was a 2015 finalist for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/finalists\/2015\">Pulitzer Prize.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Shapiro has been teaching at UNC-Chapel Hill since 1995.<\/p>\n<p>The Pulitzer web site describes the book, published by The University of Chicago Press, as \u201cfinely crafted poems with a composure that cannot conceal the troubled terrain they traverse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Reel to Reel<\/em> moves outward from the intimate spaces of family and romantic life to embrace not only the human realm of politics and culture but also the natural world, and even the outer spaces of the cosmos itself.<\/p>\n<p>David Orr of <em>The New York Times <\/em>wrote: &#8220;Shapiro is a master of the middle tone (as well as most of the formal techniques in poetry\u2019s capacious toolbox), and he probes the deeper places of the self with a skilled psychologist\u2019s gentle persistence. A delicately disquieting collection.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last October, Shapiro won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncdcr.gov\/NCAwards.aspx\">North Carolina Award for Literature<\/a>, the highest civilian honor in the state.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/casdev.unc.edu\/collegearchive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/04\/Reel-to-Reel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10404\" src=\"\/\/casdev.unc.edu\/collegearchive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/04\/Reel-to-Reel-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"Reel to Reel\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Born and raised in Boston, Shapiro is the author of 12 books of poetry (including <em>Night of the Republic<\/em>, a finalist for both the National Book Award and The Griffin Prize); two memoirs (<em>Vigil <\/em>and <em>The Last Happy Occasion<\/em>, which was a finalist for the National Book Circle Critics Award in autobiography); a novel (<em>Broadway Baby<\/em>); and a book of critical essays and two translations.<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro&#8217;s poems have appeared in more than 40 journals and magazines, including <em>The New Yorker.<\/em> He has received the highest prize for a North Carolina poet, the Roanoke-Chowan Award, twice.
