{"id":10040,"date":"2015-02-25T12:30:24","date_gmt":"2015-02-25T17:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=10040"},"modified":"2024-07-02T16:07:06","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T16:07:06","slug":"voices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=10040","title":{"rendered":"Creating an archive of civil rights voices"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Creating an Archive of Civil Rights Voices\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wLTdjgR5vmY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Assistant professor of digital humanities Seth Kotch doesn\u2019t think textbooks give a full picture of the civil rights era.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe learn about the civil rights movement through Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, but the vast majority of people in the movement were experiencing it in very different ways,\u201d he said. \u201cBut what happened to the civil rights story in N.C. and in the South after the mainstream media stopped paying attention to it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through his\u00a0<em>Media and the Movement <\/em>project, Kotch hopes to provide\u00a0a glimpse into the experiences of everyday people and activists from the civil rights era. What was the experience of someone watching one of these shows being broadcast live?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kotch has collected over 150 audio reels from radio stations across the United States. He received a $28,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to digitize the reels and create an online archive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project at its heart really is an oral history project,\u201d Kotch said. \u201cWe\u2019ve conducted interviews with almost 60 founders, owners, broadcasters, deejays, editors, reporters and others who worked on all these outlets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/casdev.unc.edu\/collegearchive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/02\/WVSP-Program-schedule004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10046\" src=\"\/\/casdev.unc.edu\/collegearchive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/02\/WVSP-Program-schedule004-703x1024.jpg\" alt=\"WVSP-Program-schedule004\" width=\"324\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a>WAFR in Durham and WVSP in Warren County, northeast of Raleigh, were two pioneering stations that did more than just broadcast, said Kotch; they provided a sanctuary for community members to seek out social services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWVSP became a site for job training when there wasn\u2019t job training for people in the area; it became a site for after-school care when there wasn\u2019t after-school care offered by the schools there. It was much more than a broadcaster sending messages \u2026 It was a real community center, of community-oriented activism that had a real impact on people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Running these stations was a labor of love, he said. Most were nonprofit and fought hard to stay financially afloat. One way stations cut costs was by taping broadcasts on reel donated from organizations like National Public Radio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the reel has been recorded over, so we don\u2019t know what\u2019s on these tapes or when they\u2019re from,\u201d he said. \u201cBut some of the reels were labeled. When you label something, there\u2019s a sense that thing will endure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kotch is working with the Digital Innovation Lab to create an interactive database to give the public access to radio broadcasts, oral histories and scholarly texts about the civil rights movement. The archive is expected to be completed in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur project for the next six months is to just listen,\u201d Kotch said. \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s a great opportunity to immerse ourselves in history and we can do the equivalent of closing our eyes and just listening, like the kid sitting on his bed listening to the station he\u2019s not supposed to be listening to in Raleigh in 1975.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Story by Parth Shah &#8217;15<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Video by Kristen Chavez &#8217;13<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Through Media and the Movement,  assistant professor Seth Kotch hopes to give a glimpse into the experiences of everyday people and activists from the civil rights era.
