The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill tied for 6th among public research universities with the most students receiving Fulbright awards for 2016-2017. UNC is ranked 14th nationally among all research universities on the Fulbright U.S. Student Program list.
Reported recently in The Chronicle of Higher Education, UNC and Duke University both had 12 student recipients for the year, the most in the state of North Carolina. Universities ranked ahead of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill include Harvard, Princeton and Yale.
Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 370,000 participants, chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential, with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. Over 1,900 U.S. students, artists and young professionals in more than 100 different fields of study are offered Fulbright Program grants to study, teach English, and conduct research annually. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program operates in over 140 countries throughout the world and is funded through an annual appropriation made by the United States Congress to the Department of State.
The Fulbright competition is administered at UNC through Iyman Gaspard, program manager for the Center of Global Initiatives and Fulbright Program adviser for the university. Between 1973 to 2015, more than 250 students from UNC received Fulbright Student Awards grants to research, study and teach abroad.
