Photography from around the world will be on display at the Carolina Global Photography Exhibition, which features work by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill alumni, faculty, staff and students. Entry is free and open to the public. The exhibition opened Jan. 11 and will run through July 21, 2017, at the FedEx Global Education Center.

All photography on display was submitted to UNC’s annual Carolina Global Photography Competition. Competition judges selected winning photographs for first, second and third places as well as thematic and regional spotlights. The exhibition features winning images and other select images that showcase the range of global activity, educational opportunities, research and service work at UNC.

“Our hope is that winning photos will inspire viewers’ curiosity and enthusiasm about global opportunities available at UNC and partner organizations,” said exhibition curator Ingrid Smith. Smith is also the photography competition coordinator and manager of global events and exhibitions for UNC Global.

Chancellor Carol L. Folt selected three photos that she finds global relevant and distinctive to be designated as Chancellor’s Choice awardees. Thematic spotlights were awarded for photos that incorporated particular themes, including food for all: local and global perspectives; global perspectives within the U.S.; learning moment; movement; nature’s beauty; a new take on an old landmark and school spirit.

First-place winner Carolina Valder’s photo shows the scenic beauty of a stone forest in Marcahuasi, Peru.

“I am incredibly grateful, honored and overjoyed to receive this award. It’s amazing to see the opportunities our university gives us to explore our beautiful world,” said Valder ’17. “I fell in love with Marcahuasi, Peru, when I was there, and am beyond thankful for the chance to share my favorite place with my Chapel Hill community.”

Each area studies center and departmental unit housed in the FedEx Global Education Center selected regional spotlights, photos that represent their mission, vision, academic focus or world area.

Parking is available after 5:00 p.m. in the McCauley Deck underneath the FedEx Global Education Center, located at 301 Pittsboro St., Chapel Hill.

The exhibition is co-sponsored by the African Studies Center; Carolina Asia Center; Carolina Center for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Civilizations; Center for European Studies; Center for Global Initiatives; Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies; Curriculum in Global Studies; Global Relations; Global Research Institute; Food Theme Steering Committee; Institute for the Study of the Americas; International Student and Scholar Services; and the Study Abroad Office.
