Honors Carolina hosts live demonstration of an Enigma machine

Very-Rare-WWII-Enigma-Cipher-Machine-1Honors Carolina will host a live webcast of an Enigma machine in action from Winston House, Carolina’s study center in London, on Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. in Graham Memorial Hall, Room 039. These famous machines protected commercial, diplomatic and military communication during the early- to mid-twentieth century.

During World War II, Bletchley Park was one of Great Britain’s best kept secrets. There, teams of mathematicians labored to decipher German military communications that had been encoded using the Enigma machine. Some historians have suggested that the code breakers’ eventual success may have shortened the war by as much as two years.
