Shenggen Fan to deliver lecture, “Ending Hunger by 2025” on Oct. 23

FAN_630x472_v2Shenggen Fan will lead the public forum “Ending Hunger by 2025” at 12:15 p.m. on Oct. 23 in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium in the FedEx Global Education Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Fan’s discussion will be moderated by Pam Jagger, associate professor of public policy and ecology and the environment, and the event will include welcome and introductory remarks by Carol L. Folt, chancellor of UNC-Chapel Hill, and Daniel Gitterman, Thomas Willis Lambeth Distinguished Chair in Public Policy.

Fan, director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute, will provide brief remarks on the current state of global food security and discuss challenges and potential policy solutions. Jagger will facilitate a discussion with Fan on topics such as hunger, micronutrient deficiency, obesity, biotechnology, climate change, governance and food policy in the context of the new United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Fan has been the director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) since 2009. He joined the institute in 1995 as a research fellow, conducting extensive research on pro-poor development strategies in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, leading IFPRI’s program on public investment in agriculture for several years. Fan is the vice-chairman of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Food and Nutrition Security, where he served as chairman of the council from 2012 to 2014.

In 2014, Fan received the Hunger Hero Award from the World Food Programme in recognition of his commitment to and leadership in fighting hunger worldwide. Fan earned a doctorate in Applied Economics from the University of Minnesota and bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Nanjing Agricultural University in China.

A light reception will take place in the Florence and James Peacock Atrium following the discussion.

This lecture is the inaugural event for the re-established Carolina Forum. Originally created in 1948, the recently reimaged Carolina Forum aims “to bring to the campus of the oldest state university in the nation the best minds in the world.” Its mission is to educate and to engage students in a dialogue about key policy issues in the U.S. and around the globe. The Carolina Forum is hosted by the Department of Public Policy.
