The curriculum in global studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill welcomed its inaugural cohort of students in the Global Studies Master of Arts Program in the fall 2014 semester. The two-year, interdisciplinary, applied-research degree combines scholarly rigor with practical skills to explore transnational themes, events and processes that affect states and societies around the world.
Students in the program concentrate in one of three thematic areas: global economics; global politics, institutions and societies; and global migration and labor rights. Ten students from the U.S. and abroad started in the program this semester.
The Global Studies M.A. Program also welcomed six new students in the Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies (REEES) concentration, which is administered by the UNC Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies and which was formerly the M.A. in Russian and East European Studies (RUES). Building on the RUES program’s 15 years of success, the concentration will continue to offer a regional and language specialization.
Students in the REEES track will have the opportunity to situate their training and knowledge in a larger comparative framework through course work and by working side-by-side with global studies M.A. students pursuing other concentrations.
“We are delighted to welcome the inaugural cohort of the master’s program in global studies and the REEES concentration,” said Milada Anna Vachudova, the incoming chair of the curriculum in global studies. “We also wish to warmly welcome back the nine students who are the final cohort of the M.A. in Russian and East European studies. The intellectual curiosity, talent and engagement of the M.A. students is creating an exciting atmosphere for all of us this academic year.”
