The public is invited to explore lessons learned from the recent upheaval in Ferguson, Missouri, at a Sept. 8 panel discussion at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
“Lessons from Ferguson about Rights, Race and Place”will begin at 7 p.m. in the Pleasants Family Assembly Room in Wilson Library. The free event is sponsored by the Center for Urban and Regional Studies and the Institute of African American Research at UNC.
An interdisciplinary panel of scholars from UNC and North Carolina State University will discuss key underlying factors that led to the events in Ferguson and suggest ways to prevent similar incidents in other places, including North Carolina. Audience participation will be encouraged.
Panelists include:
- Frank Baumgartner, Richard J. Richardson Distinguished Professor, UNC political science department
- Blair Kelley, associate professor, NCSU history department, and assistant dean for interdisciplinary studies and international programs
- Mai Nguyen, associate professor, UNC department of city and regional planning
- Theodore Shaw, director, UNC Center for Civil Rights
- Donna Marie Winn, research scientist and clinical psychologist, Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute
