UNC academic advisers win national advising awards

Three academic advisers in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences have won 2014 national advising awards.

The awards, given by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), were awarded based on significant contributions to the improvement of academic advising.

The winners include:

  • Gregory Gangi, associate director for education at the Institute for the Environment and senior lecturer in the curriculum for the environment and ecology, who won an Outstanding Advising Award in the faculty academic advising category.
  • Kimberlee Nelson, in the fine arts and humanities division, who won an Outstanding New Advising Award in the primary advising role category.
  • Dennis Soberl, in the social and behavioral sciences division, who won a Certificate of Merit in Outstanding Advising in the primary advising role category.

NACADA, based at Kansas State University, was chartered in 1979 to promote quality academic advising to ensure the educational development of students. Since that time, it has grown to more than 10,000 members. NACADA hosts an annual conference each fall and publishes a scholarly journal and a quarterly e-publication.
