Teachers in the College inspire students; win teaching awards

College of Arts and Sciences faculty and teaching assistants were big winners in the 2014 University Teaching Awards, the highest campus-wide recognition for teaching excellence.

Chancellor Carol L. Folt acknowledged the award winners at halftime of the Jan. 26 men’s basketball game against Clemson University.

College winners include:

  • Board of Governors’ Award for Excellence in Teaching: Christian Iliadis, professor of physics and astronomy.
  • Mentor Award for Lifetime Achievement: Thomas Hill, Kenan Professor of Philosophy.
  • William C. Friday/Class of 1986 Award for Excellence in Teaching: Anna Bardone-Cone, associate professor of psychology.
  • Tanner Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching: Jennifer Larson; lecturer of English; Viji Sathy, lecturer of psychology; Sarah Treul-Roberts, assistant professor of political science; Marcey Waters, professor of chemistry; Brent Wissick, professor of music.
  • Tanner Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching by Graduate Teaching Assistants: Ben Bolling, department of English; Daniel Harper, department of psychology; Megan Mitchell, department of philosophy; Stephanie Moore, department of chemistry; Clyde Ray, department of political science.
  • Johnston Teaching Excellence Awards: Meredith Petschauer, senior lecturer of exercise and sport science; Eleonora Magomedova, senior lecturer of Russian.
  • Distinguished Teaching Awards for Post-Baccalaureate Teaching and Mentoring: Charles R. Evans, professor of physics and astronomy.
  • J. Carlyle Sitterson Freshman Teaching Awards: Jane Danielewicz, associate professor of English; Heidi Kim, assistant professor of English.
  • Chapman Family Teaching Awards: Stephen Anderson, associate professor of composition and jazz studies; Enrique Neblett, assistant professor of psychology; Jennifer Smith, associate professor of linguistics.
