The multiple Grammy Award-winning Wayne Shorter Quartet will headline the 37th annual Carolina Jazz Festival Feb. 19-22 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The New York Times called Shorter, who has played with some of the biggest names in jazz, “the greatest living composer in jazz, and one of its greatest saxophonists.”
The festival promotes performance, education and scholarship in jazz studies. It features additional performances by the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra, the UNC Jazz Band, UNC Jazz Combos, UNC Faculty Jazz Ensemble and artists-in-residence Rashaan Barber (saxophone) and Roland Barber (trombone). Many of the performances are free.
The Essentially Ellington Regional High School Jazz Festival, offered in conjunction with Jazz at Lincoln Center, will bring in high school bands from North Carolina and beyond to the Frank Porter Graham Student Union on Feb. 20 for a day of performances and clinics.
University of Kansas jazz historian Sherrie Tucker will give a free lecture, “Not the Whole Story(ville): Learning from New Orleans Jazzwomen,” Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. in Kenan Music Building room 1201.
