Reckford Lecture to examine legacy of World War I

University of Chicago historian Michael Geyer will discuss the legacy of World War I in a free public lecture Feb. 20 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Geyer will discuss the “Age of Destruction: World War I — One Hundred Years Later” at 7:30 p.m. in Gerrard Hall for the 2014 Mary Stevens Reckford Memorial Lecture. A Q&A session, reception and book signing will follow. The talk is sponsored by the Institute for the Arts and Humanities in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences.

Geyer’s discussion kicks off the “World War I: The Legacy” initiative sponsored by the institute and King’s College London that will span the 2014-2015 academic year.

In his talk, Geyer will examine how World War I inaugurated an age of “total war” and transformed imperial Europe into the continent of interdependent nation-states that is recognized today.

In conjunction with the talk, the Duke-UNC Gender, War and Culture Series will host a free workshop, “Gender, War and Empire in a Global Perspective,” Feb. 20 from 1:30 to 5 p.m.in Hyde Hall’s University Room. For information, visit http://gwc.web.unc.edu/workshops/upcoming-events/.
