The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has provided approximately $657,500 in scholarships, fellowships and program support to 147 undergraduates for study abroad during 2013 and 2014. The awards, funded by private gifts to the College of Arts and Sciences, enable students to study in other countries for a semester, summer or year.
More than one-third of UNC undergraduates study in other countries before they graduate – one of the highest study abroad rates among public universities nationwide. The Study Abroad Office in the College offers more than 320 programs in more than 70 countries.
“We are grateful for the private support that makes these opportunities available to Carolina undergraduates,” said Bob Miles, associate dean for study abroad. “Their support provides life-changing experiences for students, helping them become more globally aware.”
Below are descriptions of study abroad scholarships available through the College and this year’s recipients, listed alphabetically by North Carolina county and other states and countries. Also listed are their study abroad plans and names of the scholarships they received. Students without majors listed have not yet declared majors.
Bejarano-Benning Study Abroad Scholarship for Latin America
Alumna Leslie Benning of New York City and her husband, Rafael Bejarano, established this scholarship in 2003, and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation matched their gift. The fund supports study abroad in Latin America.
Bejarano-Benning Study Abroad Scholarship for Spain/Iberian Peninsula
Alumna Leslie Benning of New York City and her husband, Rafael Bejarano, established this scholarship in 2003 to support semester or yearlong study abroad programs in Spain or Portugal.
Michael L. and Matthew L. Boyatt Award
Alumnus Michael Boyatt of Durham established this award in 1996 with his son, alumnus Matthew, of Durham. This merit award funds study abroad by undergraduates majoring in global studies or history.
John Brantley Honors Fund
Established in 2003 by alumnus John Lucier Brantley of Florida, the John Lucier Brantley Honors Fund supports undergraduate students participating in Honors Study Abroad, field research or other Honors-administered off-campus academic programs. Preference is given to in-state students for whose families’ participation would present an economic hardship.
Lucius E. Burch Fellows Program
The Burch Fellowships provide exceptional students with funds to support self-designed, off-campus learning experiences anywhere in the world. Burch Fellows have the opportunity to engage in research, travel, or other activities that will enhance their college experience.
Carolina Southeast Asia Summer Program
Funded by a generous gift in 2005 from the Twelve Labours Foundation, the program provides scholarships for 25 rising sophomores to participate in an eight-week academic program in Singapore and Thailand, designed as an introduction to Southeast Asia.
Davis-Barden Honors Study Abroad Scholarship
The scholarship covers participation in the London Honors semester abroad program. Recipients are selected for scholastic merit, intellectual engagement and financial need.
The Will Froelich Honors Fellowships
These fellowships are awarded to prospective Honors Carolina students who share Will Froelich’s adventuresome spirit, his lively intellect, his interest in civic engagement and his compassionate humanity. The fellowships are utilized by students who wish to study abroad, participate in a program or internship related to public policy, pursue civic engagement or work with a faculty mentor on independent Honors research.
Fry Study Abroad Scholarship
This need-based scholarship is intended for students wishing to study abroad in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.
Gravely Family Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2006 by Lee Stevens Gravely of Rocky Mount and her four children, all of whom are UNC alumni: Frances Gravely and Susan Gravely of Chapel Hill, Steve Gravely of Pittsboro and Page Gravely of Middleburg, Va. The award honors Lee Gravely’s late husband, alumnus Lloyd Lee Gravely, a World War II veteran and president of a family-owned export-import company, China American Tobacco Co. The fund provides annual study abroad scholarships, with a preference for North Carolinians.
Anthony and Hope Harrington Study Abroad Scholarship
Alumnus and former U.S. ambassador to Brazil Anthony Harrington of Easton, Md., created this award in 2004 with his wife, Hope. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation matched their gift. The Harringtons established the scholarship to honor former Chilean President Ricardo Lagos, who taught at UNC in 1974 and 1975 and who received an honorary degree from UNC in 2001. The fund provides scholarships for study abroad in Latin America.
Harris Teeter Study Abroad Scholarship Program
This scholarship was established in 2004 by gifts from Harris Teeter and the Dickson Foundation, Inc. Harris Teeter, the Charlotte-based supermarket chain, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Ruddick Corp., whose former chairman was the late Alan Dickson of Charlotte, a Dickson Foundation trustee. The fund provides scholarships for students from North Carolina, with a preference for Harris Teeter associates and their children.
Leonard G. and Rozelia S. Herring Study Abroad Award Fund
Alumnus Leonard Herring of North Wilkesboro and his wife, Rozelia, established this scholarship in 2005 for students with financial need and academic merit to participate in semester or year-long study abroad programs.
Hong Kong Alumni Club Scholarship Fund
Established in 2012, the Hong Kong Alumni Club Scholarship Fund provides full funding for a five-week program at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This scholarship is annually awarded to two students who have not previously traveled to Asia and who are currently in the Carolina Covenant Scholars program, which provides eligible high-performing, low-income students the opportunity to graduate debt-free.

This fund supports scholarships for students participating in Honors Study Abroad programs.

Jacques Family Honors Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2001 by John and Jane Jacques of Nashville, Tenn., whose daughter Lindsay, a UNC alumna, participated in the Honors Summer in London and Oxford program. The fund provides scholarships for students participating in Honors Study Abroad programs.
Charles Garland Johnson Sr. Scholarships
Carolina alumnae Mary Anne Johnson Dickson and Neal Johnson of Charlotte established the fund supporting these awards in 2004 to honor their late father, a banker and community leader in Elkin. The fund offers need- and merit-based scholarships to North Carolina undergraduates, with a preference for students from Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin counties.
Sarah Quinn Laney Memorial Fund
This fund supports scholarships for students participating in Honors-administered study abroad programs. Scholarship recipients must be residents of North Carolina. Preference is given to students who plan to study in France. If no students meet that qualification, the scholarship is awarded to female students studying in Europe.
Grey Lineweaver Study Abroad Scholarship
Alumna Grey Lineweaver of Greensboro established this scholarship in 2005, and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation matched her gift. The fund provides scholarships for study abroad in Latin America.
Peter G. C. Mallinson Fund for Innovation in International Education
Established in 2000, this fund provides scholarships for undergraduate students participating in Honors Study Abroad, field research, or other Honors-administered off-campus academic programs.
Phillips Ambassadors
The Phillips Ambassadors program was established in 2006 with a generous gift from alumnus Earl N. “Phil” Phillips Jr. of Chapel Hill, a business executive and former U.S. Ambassador to the Eastern Caribbean, and his family. This scholarship given annually to 25 to 50 students combines a financial award for a study abroad program in Asia with an academic course that puts the experience in a greater global context.
Richards S. Reynolds Honors Study Abroad Scholarship
This fund provides merit study abroad scholarships for two to three Honors Carolina students each year. The scholarships provide a means of further stimulating the intellectual experience of Honors Carolina students through international travel.
Frances and E.T. Rollins Jr. Study Abroad Scholarship
Frances Rollins of Durham established this fund in 2008 in honor of her late husband, a UNC graduate and a former owner, board chairman and publisher of The Herald-Sun in Durham. The fund provides scholarships for students with financial need and academic merit.
Study Abroad Awards
The Study Abroad Office awards scholarships to some students from an awards fund supported by donor gifts. The awards are based primarily, but not exclusively, on financial need.
William D. Weir Fund for Honors Fellowships in Asian Studies
This fund provides fellowships for students to develop language skills and gain practical, independent work experience in China. Recipients spend the spring semester in Beijing for intensive language study and course work on contemporary China, and then spend the summer in internships in Beijing or Shanghai.
