Summer Jazz Workshop offers free concerts June 17-21

SummerJazzWorkshoplogoThe third annual UNC Summer Jazz Workshop June 17-21 will feature free nightly concerts open to the public.

Workshop guest artists include Lynn Seaton (former bassist for the Count Basie Band, George Shearing Trio, Monty Alexander Trio) and Ross Pederson (NYC drummer who has been touring internationally with Eddie Gomez/Kenny Werner/Lou Soloff).

In its third year, the UNC Summer Jazz Workshop continues to grow. The workshop will feature 10 jazz combos this year and a total of 75 participants ranging in age from 12 to 61.

A unique component of the workshop is that rising high school seniors, college students, and adults can opt to take the course for UNC college credit, while others in the community can sign up to participate in the events for non-credit.

Workshop faculty and guest artists include: Jim Ketch – brass, improvisation, combos, lessons; Stephen Anderson – piano, theory/improvisation, combos, lessons; Dave Finucane – saxophones, combos, lessons; Gregg Gelb – saxophones, combos, lessons; Lynn Seaton – bass, beginning improvisation, combos, lessons; Jason Foureman – bass, combos, lessons; Dan Davis – drums, combos, lessons; Ross Pederson – drums, combos, lessons; Scott Sawyer – guitar, lessons; and Sean Olson – theory/skills, combos

The free concert schedule:

Monday, June 17 at 7pm – OPENING CONCERT ON THE LAWN AT POLK PLACE, featuring Jim Ketch/Dave Finucane Quintet (Bring lawn chairs, blanket, and picnic),. (Back up location in case of rain – Kenan Music Building (KMB) 1201) (Anderson, Seaton, Pederson – rhythm section).

Tuesday, June 18, 7pm – KMB 1201 – Scott Sawyer/Dave Finucane Quartet and (Seaton, Davis – rhythm section).

Tuesday, June 18, 9pm-midnight – Late Night Jam Session at Bun’s Burgers ($5 cover OR purchase of food [not just beverage]; located at 107 N. Columbia in Chapel Hill). Sit in with  Davis/Foureman/Anderson.

Wednesday, June 19, 7pm – KMB 1201 – Lynn Seaton Trio. (Seaton, Anderson, Pederson – rhythm section).

Thursday, June 20, 7pm – KMB 1201 – Gregg Gelb/Jim Ketch/Jerald Shynette Sextet (Anderson, Foureman, Pederson – rhythm section).

 Friday, June 21, 4:30-7:15pm – KMB 1201 – Student Combos Concert
