Anthony Hackney, an exercise physiologist in the department of exercise and sport science, has received the University of Santiago’s Medal of Distinction.
The Medal of Distinction is the highest honor awarded by the University of Santiago, which is ranked as a top 10 university in Latin America.
Hackney was recognized for his work in Chile and throughout Latin America concerning the health benefits associated with leading a physically active lifestyle. Hackney’s research has focused on how physical activity brings about positive changes in aspects of the endocrine system as associated with stress and disease.
Hackney was also awarded an honorary professorship of medical sciences at the university.
In addition to Hackney, the other award recipient was Michelle Bachelet, a physician who is the former President of Chile and a former United Nations envoy and ambassador for women’s issues.
Hackney is the first UNC faculty member to receive these distinctions from the University of Santiago. At UNC, Hackney also holds appointments in the Gillings School of Global Public Health and in the School of Medicine.
